![]() ![]() This is to make us feel as if we are there with Joel trying to figure out what he is going through. Most of Joel’s subconscious is filmed with shaky Tracking shots. So the purpose of these weird off putting events are simply to put us in the same mindset as Joel.Īnother way Gondry connects us to Joel is through camera angles and the narratives. We can relate with Joel and how he is feeling so we don’t question the rest. Though there is something weird going on, the verisimilitude of the film stays intact, partly because of Joel’s convincing and relate-able reactions to these weird events. This again connects back to the mind of someone who got their heartbroken, but has got a second chance and their mind is now clear. Once the movie ends and we understand what is happening in the real world, what seemed like weird random events are clear to us. This and the introducing of the weird memory procedure puts the viewer off, and makes us think something bigger is going on. ![]() But the fact that Gondry starts the movie with the ending makes us question certain events that seem very random right off the bat. In the beginning of the movie when Joel is in disbelief about the memory erasing procedure it enforces the realism that we had going into this movie. Gondry likes to combine realism and anti-realism to make us connect with the characters, but also be in question of what is going on throughout the film to keep us in that unstable state of mind that the main character is going through. This really shows how desperate Joel is and a lot of people who have had a bad breakup can relate to Joel thus reinforcing the verisimilitude of the film. This shows how helpless he feels and he just wants to hide until the procedure is over, so he can keep what little memory he has left of his beloved ex. ![]() Joel goes back to a time where he is a child and hiding under the table from his parents. The memory he chooses to run to shows a lot about his character at this time. After none of his attempts at getting Clementine back work, Joel is forced to run away to past memories in order to keep his memory of Clementine. This scene illustrates that he is not over Clementine and connects to a desperate lover trying to get their partner back. This shows how he is getting less and less in touch with reality the more Clementine rejects him. In the scene where Joel is in the library talking to “Clementine” trying to make it work, but Clementine is making it difficult, all the books are slowly fading to white. Of course Joel is running away for a different reason but his mind is still the same as the audiences mind. Also someone who has just gotten out of a tough breakup will try to “run away” from those bad memories. This connects to the mind of somebody heartbroken, whose memories are affected and “augmented” by their own emotions. Joel’s memories are augmented as he is trying to escape them. This is the part of the movie that really sets the off putting tone for the rest of the film. In the main middle chunk of this movie our main character Joel is trapped in his own subconscious reliving past memories with his ex, Clementine as these memories are fading away. Gondry’s ultimate goal is to put us in the mind of someone who has undergone a bad breakup. Using certain directorial techniques, camera angles, and clever narratives Gondry achieves this effect. The bubble like world effect that is felt throughout the movie serves the purpose of submerging the audience into the mind of an unstable heartbroken person after a breakup. ![]() At first certain events feel off putting, and the verisimilitude of this movie is put into question. In “The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind” Michel Gonry takes us into a world where memories can be erased for the purpose of forgetting about a loved one after a tough breakup. ![]()
